Born near Clairmont, Ontario Thomson was the elder brother of Tom Thomson. George was a fine painter in his own right spending his early years in Leith, Ontario and studying law at the University of Washington, Seattle, 1901. For a time he ran a business school in Seattle but took up painting in 1906 and studied at the Art Students League, New York as well as the Old Lyme, Connecticut. Thomson lived in New Haven from c.1908-26. He submitted and sold paintings through the Royal Canadian Academy from 1918-1950. In 1926 he returned to Canada and lived in Owen Sound to continue to paint mostly landscapes in oil. A booklet on the artist was published by John A. Libby. See "Shop" on this website for details.
