John Alfsen was born in Michigan and came to Canada as a boy. He took evening classes in drawing at the University of Toronto and then studied under Fred Varley, JEH MacDonald, JW Beatty, Emanuel Hahn and CM Manly (1920-22). He attended the Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp and the Academie Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Alfsen furthered his studies at the Art Students League in New York. He taught at the Ontario College of Art for 45 years and became one of Canada’s finest portrait artists.
