William Cresswell was born in England and emigrated to Canada in 1848. He began to exhibit his work at the Upper Canada Provincial Exhibition in 1856 and traveling extensively from Georgian Bay, Quebec, New Hampshire, Lake Nipigon and the Maritimes. He continued to show his work in exhibitions in Upper Canada and London where he won a medal at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in 1886. He was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1874 and in 1880 he was a founding member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
