Joachim Gauthier was born in North Bay where his talent was directed early in his life when he apprenticed as a sign writer in his teens. He later studied with J.E.H. MacDonald and Franklin Carmichael. He was a commercial artist for Sampson Matthews Ltd. for over 37 years. Carmichael, Casson and he were charter members of The Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC). He was commissioned by the McMichael Conservation Collection at Kleinburg to do portraits of Tom Thomson, The Group of Seven and some of their contemporaries. Joachim's work has been represented by John A. Libby since 1981. A booklet on the artist was published at the gallery. See "Shop" on this website for details.
