Nicholas Hornyansky was born in Budapest, Hungary where he attended the Academy of Fine Art. He was a portrait painter of important European figures and apprenticed printmaking in Paris where he learned the single pull multicolour aquatint method. He came to Toronto in 1929 where he developed the technique into his unique approach to printing and became one of Canada's finest printmakers. He taught printmaking at the Ontario College of Art until 1965.
