Stuart Shaw was born in Collingwood and attended the Toronto Technical School and Ontario College of Art where he studied under F.S. Challener and J.W. Beatty. He was a landscape painter of the impressionist school who painted prolifically from about 1925 to 1965 mostly in Muskoka, Lake Superior, Georgian Bay and Thunder Bay areas. He made several sketching trips to the Rocky Mountains while exhibiting in many places in Ontario. Shaw was also a successful printmaker.
