Dorothy Stevens was born in Toronto and was considered the most accomplished Canadian etcher of her time. She was also a painter, portraitist, illustrator and teacher. Stevens studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, the Academie Colarossi and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere both located in Paris. As an official war artist, her etchings depicted factory workers in munitions plants. She taught art classes at the Women's Art Association, and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. She was also well known for her portraits.
